Job Description:
The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the
operations of the shelter and maintaining the financial viability
of the non-profit corporation working closely with the BOD,
volunteers, and community.

Classification: Full Time Salaried
Purpose of Position
The Mission of the BVAS is to save the lives of homeless and lost
animals by caring for and loving them until they are either
returned to their owners or adopted into qualified homes. The ED is
responsible for overseeing the operations of the shelter and
maintaining the financial viability of the non-profit corporation
working closely with the BOD, volunteers, and community. This
position reports directly to the President of the BVAS Board of
Directors.
Education and Experience
A High School Diploma is required. College courses preferred but
not required and may be supplanted by experience. The ED must have
proven skills managing non-profit organizations including:
preparing and executing budgets, developing and implementing fund
raising events, experience in preparing, attaining and
administering external grants and meeting all legal and ethical
requirements of 501c3 non-profit organization. The ED must be
skilled in both written and verbal communication, have a working
knowledge of animal care and adoption issues, and be experienced
with people management, budget and finance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
A. Financial Management and Public Relations
Develop, implement, and oversee income development. This includes
fund raising activities and events organized to secure funding and
donations of goods and services from individuals, agencies,
professional groups, businesses and others through media exposure
and publicity campaigns.
Act as a public relations spokesperson on behalf of the BOD and the
BVAS organization.
Develop, coordinate, and oversee publicity and marketing programs
that keep donors and the community informed of BVAS activities.
Design and maintain a social media profile of the BVAS to drive
awareness, adoptions, and donations.
Assist the BOD Treasurer in preparing and submitting financial
reports and budgets to the BOD for approval.
Monitor and report to the BOD financial compliance to budgetary
goals.
Prepare reports as necessary to inform the BOD of all issues with
the fiscal well being of the BVAS.
B. Strategic Planning
Develop BVAS operational, managerial, facility and other long-term
strategic plans to present to the BOD for approval and funding.
Implement strategic plans approved by the BOD and report regularly
on progress toward attainment.
Recommend to the BOD, updates of policies and procedures for the
BVAS.
In conjunction with the President of the BOD, prepare agendas for
monthly meetings that provide for both short- and long-term needs
of the BVAS and keep our members informed.
Participate on committees or task groups as necessary to assure the
mission and goals of the BVAS are being met.
C. Operations and Personnel Management
Assure management of human resources according to the policies and
procedures established by the BOD for the BVAS.
The Shelter Manager reports directly to the ED and is responsible
for managing the staff and facilities of the BVAS per the guidance
of the Executive Director.
Review, approve and recommend to the BOD all salary adjustments
requested for employees by the Shelter Manager.
Provide written and verbal reviews of performance for the Shelter
Manager who in turn provides the same for shelter employees on an
annual schedule or as needed.
Review and recommend to the BOD salary adjustments for the Shelter
Manager.
Develop and oversee a volunteer program that supports both
operations and fund-raising activities throughout the
community.
Regularly communicate with staff to keep them informed of shelter
accomplishments and activities to promote pride in their work.
D. Compliance with Laws, Regulations, Policies and Guidelines
Assure the BVAS is compliant with all local, state, county and
federal employment and tax laws.
Assure the BVAS is compliant with all laws that regulate a
non-profit organization dedicated to the shelter, care, and
adoption of animals.
Oversee accurate record keeping of all shelter operations and
financial compliance to budgets established annually by the
BOD.
Develop and oversee accurate documentation of adoptions, donation
receipts, spay/neuter programs, chip identification, government
contracts for goods and services and other activities as
necessary.
